New Puppy

Ben and LilahBringing a new puppy home means your house dog will sniff you like a wife checking for lipstick on your collar after an office party, four paws and countless hairs to make your cleaner go nuts, regretting you chose a green carpet, the sound of lapping where you rested your beer glass, puppy powwows that usurp sober talk about politics and philosophy, sleeping uneasily again like times past when a cry at 2 AM announced a pudgy diaper, patrolling the lawn for squidgy mines disguised as fall leaves, your meal interrupted by one feigning hunger, castration angst about canine eugenics, a burst of new love.Dog poem
